The weather is changing, so this will be the last hummingbird program on Facebook Live until the little critters return in spring.

Start your morning with the early birds as the Forest Preserve District of Will County presents its “Breakfast with the Hummingbirds” program on Facebook Live.

The free, all-ages program will be streamed from 7-7:45 a.m. Wednesday, September 2, on the District’s Facebook page.

This is a great time to focus on hummingbirds, said Bob Bryerton, the interpretive naturalist who will be leading the program.

“Hummingbird migration is near peak at this time of year,” he said. “And this program is a great way to experience hummingbirds online from the comfort of your own home.”

Hummingbird feeders will be stocked with food and the camera will be recording as the birds fuel up for their journey south.

“We have a good number of hummingbirds visiting our feeders at this time of year,” Bryerton said. “Nestlings are starting to show up at the feeders and so are some birds that are already starting to migrate south. This is a chance for folks to enjoy the birds as they flit and fight for positions at the feeders.”

Hummingbirds are not particularly good at sharing their food, he added.

“There is a lot of flying around and chasing to keep other birds away as well as birds stopping to sip from the feeders,” he said. “It is a great chance to relax and enjoy these beautiful little birds as you get your day started. It is also a chance to get some of your questions about hummingbirds and feeding hummingbirds answered.”

Bryerton will answer questions in real time. Just post a comment under the feed on Facebook. He also will be sharing interesting facts about the birds and their journey south for the winter. Learn where they will be going, when the last of them can be spotted this year, and when the first arrivals will return next year.

Viewers also will get information on how they can create their own hummingbird feeding area.
Please note, this is an online only event.

So, sit back, relax on your computer or smart device and enjoy the early morning hummingbird show!
