Joliet Junior College (JJC) started off the new year by announcing the resignation of Board Trustee Michael O’Connell, which was effective on January 2. Trustee O’Connell, who has served as a college trustee for 10 years, is focused on spending more time with his family.

"I've thoroughly enjoyed my tenure on the board at JJC. I feel the college is at a much better place today than when I started over a decade ago. President Mitchell has made a very positive impact on the environment at JJC. I can't say enough about the entire staff,” O’Connell said. “I'm at a point in life where I want to enjoy as much time as I can with my wife, four children and nine grandchildren.”

Prior to serving on the Board of Trustees, O’Connell was a dedicated fixture in the Joliet community. He worked as a teacher, administrator, and coach at Joliet Township High School for more than 30 years until his retirement in 2006. While at JJC, some of his most influential contributions included growing opportunities within the athletics program and strengthening career and technical education, according to Dr. Judy Mitchell, JJC president.

“Trustee O’Connell has been a trusted voice on the board and within the community for many years, and I am sad that his service in this capacity is now coming to a close,” said Dr. Mitchell. “JJC’s growth in facilities, academic programs, and its strong fiscal responsibility through the cost-savings committee Trustee O’Connell led is a major part of the college’s transformation over the last decade. We are grateful for his partnership and support of our initiatives.”

O’Connell’s current term was set to run from May 2019 through May 2025. The college is now looking to fill the vacancy, and the qualified candidate will serve until the next regular election in April 2021. Eligible candidates must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years or older, and a resident of District 525 for at least one year immediately preceding the date of the appointment. Those interested in filling the vacancy must submit or postmark their materials by 5 p.m. on January 10, 2020 to be considered.
