Joliet Man Fatally Shot on Street Corner

The Joliet Police Department is investigating the incident as a homicide.

JOLIET, IL — A 56-year-old Joliet man was shot to death Friday evening.

James D. Waddell was found unresponsive on the northeast corner of McDonough and Ottawa streets from an apparent gunshot wound, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office. He was pronounced dead Friday at 10:48 p.m. at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center Emergency Room.

The Joliet Police Department is investigating the incident as a homicide. Despite rumors on social media, Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said the shooting was not police involved.

"(There) was a witness who heard shots and saw (a) subject running from the area wearing a brown Carhartt jacket," Benton said.

An autopsy will be performed Saturday. A final cause and manner of death will be determined pending police, autopsy and toxicological reports.
