On Friday, March 6, 2020, Joliet Township High School students competed in the Regional Drafting Contest held at Joliet Junior College. Four Joliet Central High School students and two Joliet West High School students placed and earned medals. Two of the students are advancing to the State Competition at Illinois State University on Saturday, April 18.

Within this competition, there were eight divisions: Introductory to Board; Introductory to Computer Aided Drafting (CAD); 3D Modeling; Assembly Modeling; Machine CAD; Architectural CAD (2D); Architectural CAD (3D); and Architectural Board. Each student had an hour and a half to complete their division based drafting problems. A total of 106 students competed from the following nine high schools: Joliet Central, Joliet West, Lemont, Lockport Township, Marquette Academy, Lincoln Way East, Lincoln Way Central, Lincoln Way West, and Seneca.

Joliet Central teacher and team sponsor Dale West said, “The entire competition was a great experience for all of the students. They had the opportunity to see the amazing facility and programs we have in our own backyard at JJC. I am very proud of all of my students who competed in the competition. Many of them spent countless hours early in the morning, during their advisory/lunch, and after school during open lab practicing for the competition. As their teacher it has been very rewarding to see their growth and their CAD skills improve as they progress through our drafting program.”

Scott Boudreau and Laura Cotner are two of the main people at JJC who set the entire event up and make sure it runs seamlessly. They also bring in a set of proctors and judges who donate their time and help make the competition the best it can be.”

If any student is interested in CAD, 3D Modeling, or 3D Printing, they should speak to their counselor about signing up for the Tech CAD class.
