A news release issued Friday morning by Lion Electric stated that as part of its agreement with the state of Illinois, Lion has committed to an initial investment of at least $70 million over a 3-year period.
The 900,000 square-foot facility, for which building ramp up is anticipated in the second half of 2021, is expected to add a minimum of 745 clean energy direct jobs to the region over the next three years, with an annual production capacity of up to 20,000 all-electric buses and trucks, the company announced.
Several Joliet officials including Mayor Bob O'Dekirk, city manager Jim Capparelli, economic development director Derek Conley as well as Joliet City Councilmen Larry Hug, Pat Mudron, Cesar Guerrero and Councilwomen Jan Quillman, Sherri Reardon and Betty Gavin were on hand for Friday's blockbuster announcement for Joliet, which prides itself for having the motto "City of Champions."

At Friday's news conference, Mayor O'Dekirk stood next to Congressman Bill Foster in front of the 100 percent made electric school bus and told everyone: "This is a big day in Joliet. We've known for sometime that we were a finalist, and it's just great to see our city compete and win at the national level. The jobs that are going to come here, the high-paying jobs are going to continue to come to Joliet and Will County. It's a real economic engine for Illinois. I'm happy to have this partnership with Lion Electric so thank you."
On Friday morning, Joliet and Will County officials attending the governor's announcement felt like champions. The expansion of Lion Electric into Joliet is expected to generate a ton of highly skilled union labor jobs for the city.
"So many people have worked together to bring Lion Electric to Illinois and to Joliet and to Will County," Pritzker told everyone. "This is one of the best places in the entire world to be if you're a manufacturer, if you're somebody that wants to be in the crossroads of America, making sure that you're in the distribution hub of the world. Being right here in Will County is the place to be."

Since 2016, Lion Electric has manufactured medium and heavy-duty vehicles including public transportation buses and school buses at its primary vehicle assembly plant in St. Jerome, Quebec. Vehicles assembled by Lion are 100 percent electric, and that will be true once vehicle production gets underway in Joliet.
The Joliet facility will house manufacturing, research and development and engineering.
