JOLIET, IL - The city's biggest facility upgrade in years at the recently renamed Route 66 Joliet Stadium was not free. The costs to install Field Turf, new fencing and make other improvements inside the ballpark may approach $2.5 million. But over the past weeks, the stadium is starting to take shape.

On Wednesday, the Joliet Patch went inside the stadium to capture these photos. The Joliet Slammers open their season on May 15. "Baseball has always been key, but these improvements will now allow for concerts, special events and other sports," city economic development director Steve Jones told Joliet Patch.
"That all brings more folks to our restaurants and other businesses. That fosters awareness that downtown Joliet is moving forward," Jones added.
