Anne Arundel County Opens Warming Centers in Advance of Arctic Blast

Dangerously low wind chills Tuesday will increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

Anne Arundel County has opened several warming stations throughout the county in response to the arctic blast descending on the region late Monday and into Tuesday. 

Wind chill values in the county are expected as low as -5 to -15 degrees overnight and Tuesday, increasing the risk for frostbite and hypothermia, particularly in vulnerable populations. 

Beginning at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, police district community rooms will be open 24 hours as warming centers through noon Wednesday. The community rooms are located at the following addresses: 

  • Southern District, 35 Stepneys Ln., Edgewater
  • Northern District, 939 Hammonds Ln., Baltimore
  • Eastern District, 3700 Mountain Rd., Pasadena
  • Western District 8273 Telegraph Rd., Odenton
On Tuesday, the Department of Aging will also open all senior centers as warming centers, beginning at 8 a.m. The department will provide transportation to the centers if needed. Senior centers are located at the following addresses: 
  • South County Senior Center, 27 Stepney Ln., Edgewater
  • Annapolis Senior Center, 119 South Villa Ave., Annapolis
  • Pascal Senior Center, 125 Dorsey Rd., Glen Burnie
  • Pasadena Senior Center, 4103 Mountain Road, Pasadena
  • Catherine L. O'Malley Senior Center, 1270 Odenton Rd., Odenton
  • Arnold Senior Center, 44 Church Rd.,  Arnold
Anne Arundel County Public Libraries will also serve as warming centers Tuesday. The larger five branches—the Annapolis Area Library, Crofton Branch, North County Area Library, Severna Park Branch and West County Area Library—are open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and  9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The 10 community branches—Broadneck Branch, Brooklyn Park Branch, Eastport-Annapolis Neck Branch, Edgewater Branch, Linthicum Branch, Maryland City at Russett Branch, Mountain Road Branch, Provinces Branch, Riviera Beach Branch and South County Branch—are open 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Saturday; and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

All county warming centers are open to the public and have public restrooms. Pets will not be accepted at any of the above warming centers.

There are also beds available for the homeless in Anne Arundel County Monday night. There are 75 beds in North County and 100 beds in South County at the following locations:
  • Arundel Christian Church, 710 Aquahart Rd., Glen Burnie 
  • John Wesley United Methodist Church, 6922 Ritchie Hwy., Glen Burnie 
  • Bay Ridge Christian Church, 1071 Bay Ridge Rd., Annapolis 
  • Lighthouse Shelter - 10 Hudson St., Annapolis
