Area Senior Centers Announce July Events

Are you a member of a local senior center?

Here's a list of planned activities at the Pascal and Brooklyn Park senior centers, according to press releases from the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities.

• July 4—Closed for Independence Day.
• July 9—“Food Safety for Seniors” will be taught at 10 a.m. by Naeemah Raqib, extension educator of family and consumer science at University of Maryland Extension. She’ll provide updates for safe food handling practices and teach the proper ways for thawing, reheating, storing and serving foods. Register in advance at the office.
• July 10—The OBI Bell Choir will perform at 12:30 p.m. as part of the Pascal Grandparent Specials. They will perform oldies and religious, holiday, patriotic, Irish and polka music. The event is open to grandparents and their school-age grandchildren.
• July 12—Food historian Sue Latini and gourmet chef Rosalie Falter—aka Chefs on the Go—will offer a B&O Railroad-themed program at 10 a.m. The B&O Railroad was noted for superior dining and impeccable courtesy. The Chefs on the Go menu will consist of leek soup, Swiss-style beef steak, minted peas and carrots, coleslaw and caramel custard. Attendees are encouraged to bring railroad memorabilia for show and tell. Cost: $3. Register at the office.
• July 13—The center will screen “Born to be Wild” at 12:15 p.m. as part of the Pascal Grandparent Specials. The event is open to grandparents and their school-age grandchildren.
• July 18—Kerry Wixted, of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources’ Wild Acres Program, will present the free “Wildscaping: Creating and Maintaining Backyard Wildlife Habitat” at 10 a.m. Learn ways to enhance your landscape to attract a variety of wildlife at the free event. • July 24—The Maryland Department of Natural Resources’ Scales and Tall Tales program will be held at 12:30 p.m. as part of the Pascal Grandparent Specials. The event is open to grandparents and their school-age grandchildren.
• July 26—The Bates Jazz Quintet will perform at noon for dancing and listening pleasure.
• July 27—The center will screen “Rio” at 12:15 p.m. as part of the Pascal Grandparent Specials. The event is open to grandparents and their school-age grandchildren.
• July 31—“Backyard Birding: Attracting Songbirds” will be offered at 12:30 p.m. Donna MacAuley-Shoemaker will discuss bird identification, habitat needs, migration patterns, and more while displaying photos. Register at the office.
• Aug. 1—Registration begins for three new classes offered by Anne Arundel Community College. The new classes, offered from 2 to 4 p.m. beginning Oct. 1, will be “Major Supreme Court Cases” on Mondays, “History of Anne Arundel County” on Tuesdays and “History of Ireland” on Wednesdays. • July 3—A Fourth of July trivia contest will be held at 10:30 a.m. A special prize will go to the first five people who arrive at the center wearing red, white and blue.
• July 4—Closed for Independence Day.
• July 10—Farmer’s Market Coupons will be available at the center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for income eligible seniors. These allow seniors to purchase fresh, unprepared local produce at reduced costs at participating farmer’s markets and roadside stands.
• July 11—The AARP Driver Safety Program will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants will learn the current rules of the road and defensive driving techniques. From July 1 through Aug. 31 all current and retired educators and school personnel are eligible to take the classroom course for just $5. Sign up in advance.
• July 12—Matthew Wozniak, resident and co-founder of Angel of Care Home Care, will present a program from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The organization helps senior citizens and people who are disabled with activities of daily living which promotes independent living. 
• July 13—Bring a joke, a silly story or a crazy skit to share with members on “Comedy Hour” from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. 
• July 16—Minerva Home Healthcare Inc. will present “Why is there a need to act FAST?” The participants will talk about stroke, Telecommunications Infrastructure Standard (TIA) and warning signs at these programs from 10 to 11:15 a.m.
• July 17—This day has been declared national Peach Ice Cream Day by the center and will feature a celebration from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. The center is supplying a recipe to make peach ice cream and members can enjoy a sample that day. Guitarist and vocalist Tom Lucas will play and sing American standards, folk tunes, country and western, and '50s and '60s rock and roll.
• July 18—Minerva Home Healthcare Inc. will present “Why is there a need to act FAST?” The participants will talk about stroke, Telecommunications Infrastructure Standard (TIA) and warning signs at these programs from 10 to 11:15 a.m.
• July 20—Chess Day has been celebrated since 1966 and Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center joins in the competition from 10 to 11 a.m.
• July 23—Genesis Hammonds Lane Center will discuss “25 Easy Ways to Get Exercise” at 10:30 a.m.
• July 28—The center will host a flea market from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the center.
• July 30—Learn the whys and hows of safe food handling, preparation, and storage at the “Food Safety” program from 10 to 11 a.m. Review techniques to reduce the risk of food-borne illnesses at this presentation.
