Celebrating Summer Solstice in Maryland

The longest day of the year is quickly approaching. What will you do to celebrate?

The summer solstice is the one day each year with the longest amount of daylight, and it’s coming up on Wednesday, June 20.

You may want to take advantage of those extra sunny hours with a trip to the beach, a backyard barbecue or one of these Maryland summer solstice celebrations.

  1. Head 10 miles north and experience the solstice at the on Saturday from 8 p.m. to midnight. This annual fundraiser benefits the education and outreach programs of the science center and includes live music, food and cocktails. Purchase tickets online for $125.
  2. Drive a bit more but stay in Anne Arundel County on Wednesday and head to Lothian for a hike in the Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary. The hike will last from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Anyone age 10 or older can attend at a cost of $3 for those under 18, and $5 for adults.
  3. Go on a kayaking trip on Wednesday with the Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge in Rock Hall, MD, from 6 to 8 p.m. Register with jfairchild2@washcoll.edu or call 410-778-7295.
  4. Take a hike through the Hereford Wildlands at Gunpowder Falls State Park in Baltimore County. This is a 3-mile guided hike from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday. There is no charge; just call 410-592-2897 to pre-register.
