Chesapeake Bay Candle Closing Glen Burnie Facility

The business is shutting down its 125,000-square-foot factory, warehouse and distribution center in Glen Burnie and laying off 125 employees

GLEN BURNIE, MD -- After eight years in Glen Burnie, Chesapeake Bay Candle will be shutting down its manufacturing facility there in September and laying off 125 full-time employees. Chesapeake Bay Candle will be moving its business from the Chesapeake Bay area to Massachusetts since the New Jersey-based Newell Brands bought the Rockville-based company in 2017.

The business conducted in Glen Burnie will be consolidated with Newell's Home Fragrance Division in Whatley, Mass., reported the The Baltimore Sun. Chesapeake Bay Candle was founded in early 1994 by Mei Xu and David Wang, according to the company's website. The then-husband-and-wife team hand-made candles in the basement of their home in Annapolis and named their candles after the Chesapeake Bay shoreline near their home. They moved their company to Rockville and opened two factories in Asia before setting up shop in Glen Burnie in 2011 at the soon-to-be closed 125,000-square-foot factory, warehouse and distribution center.
