Don't Forget the Flowers

William Streams, owner of Baltimore Evergreen Nursery in Severna Park, has been selling roses along Ritchie Highway in Glen Burnie for years to help out those last-minute Valentine's Day shoppers.

On Feb. 13 and 14 of the past 20 years, William Streams has sold roses for those commuting around Valentine's Day—including setting up shop at the .

The owner of Baltimore Evergreen Nursery in Severna Park said he and others from the nursery set up throughout the area to cater to those who might forget the about the lovers' holiday.

"Last year I was here in the morning at 7:30 [on Valentine's Day] and sold through the night until 8 a.m. on the 15th. They had to wake me up a couple times, but I was here," he said. "I'll stay until I run out of roses."

Streams, who's been in the nursery business for 44 years, said some of his customers aren't able to see their sweetheart on Valentine's Day, and some just forget.

"Some folks miss [Valentine's Day] all together and don't want to get in trouble with their baby," he said.

Streams said most of his customers are men but he sees his fair share of women, too.

"We get people that are in love and need to get something for their baby," he said when asked who his typical client was.

He sold a few dozen roses Monday but said he expects to see more of a rush Tuesday.

"The 14th is definitely the Super Bowl of flower sales," he said.

But Streams said he doesn't only see last-minute shoppers—many customers have stopped by his truck on the corner of Ritchie Highway and Ordnance Road for years.

"One guy who just left buys here every year—two dozen roses," he said.

Streams sells roses by the dozen, ranging from $15 to $25, and single roses ranging from $2.50 to $3. Carnations also are available.

"I may have some Gerbera daisies, too, but I won't know until tomorrow," he said Monday afternoon.

Streams said he plans to be back at Exxon Tuesday morning at about 8 a.m., or earlier depending on the weather.
