Family Celebrates 30 Years Of Making Pizzas, Subs In Glen Burnie

The Misuracas own Capri Pizza & Sub Express where even their salad croutons are homemade.

GLEN BURNIE, MD — For more than 30 years, Capri Pizza & Sub Express has served homemade food to families and others at their 337 Hospital Drive location. Owners Karen and Joe Misuraca were thrilled to celebrate their anniversary, particularly during such a difficult time. The coronavirus pandemic has been hard on businesses, especially restaurants.

"We are just so overwhelmed with joy and happiness that we have been able to keep up our strong business in this same community. My husband and I have worked very hard over the years as a small business to give the best life we could for our family and staff," Karen Misuraca told Patch.

As a predominately carry-out restaurant, the transition to "to-go" meals during the pandemic wasn't too big of a leap for the Misuracas to make.

"Thankfully we are mainly a carry-out business to begin with, so our transition at first wasn't as difficult as it was for many other dine-in restaurants in the area. However, our catering orders have been affected as lots of doctor offices and hospitals in the area were not doing outside food at first. Fortunately, we have a great relationship with Baltimore Washington Medical Center, and were able to provide numerous meals weekly, safely for our front line heroes," Misuraca said.

If someone hasn't popped by Capri's lately, Misuraca said the most popular items among customers seem to be the traditional cheese, white style, Sicilian, pepperoni, meat lovers and veggie pizzas, along with cheese steaks, the Italian cold cut, and chicken or meatball parmigiana subs. They make their own dough in the shop, which is used for their pizzas, breads and croutons.

"The real winner is our famous grilled chicken caesar salad and coming in close to those are the duo salad, which has grilled chicken and grilled shrimp. Customers love to add boiled eggs, mozzarella or feta cheeses, and extra of our Caesar dressing," she said.

When restaurants are able to open fully, Capri seats approximately 20 people in three booths and at four two-topper tables. They hire fewer than a dozen employees and have some helpful hints for other business owners.

"Be there all the time and put in a lot of effort and always watch over your business," Misuraca said.
