Family Seeks Help After Toddler's Death on July 4

Julius McGee loved Spider-Man.

The 3-year-old had Spider-Man socks, underwear, bathing suit, sheets and, of course, the Halloween costume.

"He wore the costume every day. He was Spider-Man," said Dave Straitz, Julius' grandfather.

On July 4, . Straitz said the family has struggled financially for years and the devastating death of Julius has left the family reeling.

"His mom had to stop working to raise Julius because they couldn't afford daycare," Straitz said. "He has an older sister Alyssa [who is 7] and then last September they had twins. So now they have one vehicle and income."

The family held memorial services for Julius on July 9.

"When [Julius] smiled he lit up not only the room—the whole neighborhood. Everyone who met him was just captivated by his smile," Straitz said.

Anne Arundel County police responded to the 600 block of Old Riverside Road at about 9:45 p.m. and spoke with witnesses who said Julius and his family were attending a function when they realized he was missing toward the end of the night, according to a police press release.

The father found Julius at the bottom of the pool. Anne Arundel County medics transported him to Harbor Hospital by ambulance in serious and life-threatening condition.

Julius was pronounced dead by a physician at Harbor Hospital at about 10:25 p.m.
