GBIA Vice President To Recieve Carter Award

Candy Fontz, vice president of the Glen Burnie Improvement Association, will receive this year's Richard H. Carter Memorial Award on Sunday at the Memorial Day Parade.

(GBIA) Vice President Candy Fontz is the 2012 winner of the .

The award, which will be presented Sunday at the annual , is for people living in the 21060 or 21061 ZIP codes who have served the Glen Burnie community through a variety of organizations or activities.

Fontz will be recognized by Walter Morrison, Carter's grandson, during the opening ceremony. She also will ride in a place of honor at the beginning of the parade with her granddaughters, according to the Maryland Gazette.

Fontz told the Maryland Gazette she was “shocked” when Barbara Sabur, Carter award committee chairwoman, called to congratulate her.

Fontz joined GBIA in 1989 and volunteers for many of the groups activities, including the parade, the , the ice cream social and the 5K run, according to the Gazette.

She also volunteers with other organizations in the community, such as the .

For being the winner, GBIA will donate $200 to the charity of Fontz's choice—Arundel House of Hope, the Gazette reported.

The last Carter Award recipient was Richard C. Gross Sr. in 2010. No honoree was selected last year because the nominees did not meet the award's guidelines, according to the June/July 2011 GBIA newsletter.
