Longtime Glen Burnie Business Shutting Its Doors

People with weddings and events planned for 2021 are scrambling to find alternate locations because Michael's Eighth Avenue is closing.

GLEN BURNIE, MD — People with receptions already planned for next year at longtime Glen Burnie business Michael's Eighth Avenue are scrambling to find alternative locations since the business' owners announced they are closing.

Vickie Montz shared on Facebook that her wedding was scheduled to be held at Michael's Eighth Avenue on May 22, 2021. She can't find a new location until she receives a refund.

"This is completely heartbreaking. This is unfair that your property manager waited 'til now to give you notice," she posted.

For decades, the business has been an entertainment mecca, from hosting weddings and receptions to crab feasts and special event dinners. Harry and May Wagner opened their business in the 1950s and their son, Mike, eventually took over the family enterprise, only to be succeeded by his son, Scott, who added a boxing ring for another entertainment option.

The lease on the building where Michael's Eighth Avenue is expiring and won't be renewed, the family announced on Facebook.

"It is with a heavy heart we share that after 30 years, Michael's is being forced to close our doors. Our property management has decided to terminate our lease; this was not our choice," they wrote. "We are so grateful for the memories made and the relationships built over the years."

Facebook user Tom Canoles thanked the family on their post for "the most amazing wedding" in October.

"Your staff is amazing. They went above and beyond in every way. Very sorry this has happened to you. Our son and future daughter-in-law had a date planned there next October for their wedding," Canoles wrote.

George Mayo shared that for more than 20 years, the Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation held its annual banquet and auction at Michael's Eighth Avenue.

"The owners and staff at Michael's were always extremely helpful, flexible, patient and accommodating. As an agricultural group, good food was essential. Michael's met or exceeded every expectation. We are all very sorry to learn of this end to an important era for hospitality in Maryland. Best wishes to the Michael's Family for good health and success in all future endeavors," he posted.

Former employee Gloria Woods described the closure as "very sad."

"It was a great place to work," she shared on Facebook. "It was my pleasure to work for Mr. Mike, Ms. Carol and Scott Wagner. They were great people to work for."

The business will be officially closed Dec. 31, the owners told Patch.
