Monarch Academy Glen Burnie Wins Math Competition

Monarch Academy Glen Burnie wins first place at a Johns Hopkins University math competition.

From Monarch Academy Glen Burnie:Monarch Academy Glen Burnie elementary school students received first place and third place trophies at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab’s Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) regional competition. The first-place trophy recognized a student-made public service announcement presentation and video about homelessness, and the third-place trophy recognized a student-built truss bridge made of balsa wood capable of holding 8,300 grams.

Twenty Monarch Academy students participated in the competition’s four challenges: computer programming for cybersecurity, engineering a theme park ride, effective communication using a PSA and wood bridge design. Students divided into four groups and met after school weekly to prepare challenge submissions, including also a “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”-themed roller coaster and an original computer coding game designed to teach about cybersecurity. Administered by the Applied Physics Lab, the MESA program helps Maryland students in third through 12th grades prepare to enroll in and graduate from two- or four-year colleges or universities with degrees in science, technology, engineering and math. Students develop leadership skills, improve their academic performance, work in teams and learn to compete effectively. Monarch Academy Glen Burnie, a public charter school affiliated with TranZed Alliance, serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade with an enriched, rigorous, hands-on, academic curriculum emphasizing project-based learning and the arts and technology. In addition, Monarch Academy follows Transformation Education, an organizational philosophy that infuses a school’s beliefs and values into the look of the school building, instructional approach, teachers’ mindset and behavior and operating systems.
