Once on the scene, officers reportedly saw a man driving off the store parking lot in a Chevrolet Cavalier and tried to stop the car but the driver would not pull over. Police said they followed the Cavalier briefly and the driver jumped out of the car, attempting to run away, but officers caught up to the man and detained him.

Another officer remained at Ace Hardware and confirmed that the store had been burglarized and collected evidence. Police said officers recovered many of the store's items from Rotramel's car, including power tools.
