Police: Threat at Glen Burnie High 'Unfounded'

Glen Burnie High School received a threat Thursday night and informed police about a possible violent incident at the school on Friday.

UPDATED 12:28 p.m.: Anne Arundel County police said they determined that a Thursday-night threat about a possible violent incident at was unfounded.

In a letter sent home to parents, Glen Burnie principal Vickie Plitt said the school system received an anonymous call stating that weapons could possibly be in the school on Friday.

In response, police spokesman Justin Mulcahy said officers, working with school officials, implemented a safety plan Friday morning to prepare for students to arrive at school.

In Plitt's letter to parents, she addressed some of the misinformation that had been spread.

"With today's technology, news and rumors can spread more quickly than ever," she wrote. "To be clear, our school was never on lockdown today. There were no weapons discovered, and the school day was a normal one with no disruptions."

Plitt said in the letter they had identified the student who told the school system there would be weapons on school grounds Friday and that student admitted the information was false.

"Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against the student who was involved," she said in the letter.

Despite the determination that the threat was unfounded, many parents still opted to pick their children up from school early.

"I don't care if it's a rumor or not, I'd rather be safe than sorry," said Sharon Dunnigan, who picked up her 10th-grade daughter and her neighbor's daughter around noon.
