Teen Enters Plea in Mr. Wings & Pizza Murder

UPDATE (1:05 p.m.)—A Brooklyn Park teen entered an Alford plea Monday to the 2010 second-degree murder of Misael Flores during a botched robbery of Mr. Wings & Pizza in Glen Burnie.

Charles Sequan Butler, 19, of the 100 block of West Edgevale Road in Brooklyn Park entered the Alford plea in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court, which means he admits the state had enough of a case against him to find him guilty while maintaining his innocence. The plea carries the same weight as a guilty plea.

Butler was one of four suspects charged in connection with Flores' November 2010 murder at Mr. Wings & Pizza. Flores was fatally shot the day before his 21st birthday.

Butler is scheduled to be sentenced July 20. He faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.

State's Attorney's Office spokeswoman Kristin Fleckenstein said as the case unfolded, things went in a different direction than expected and the plea was the best way to move forward.

Over the course of two weeks in November 2010, ; Willie Antonio McLean, 20, and Shawn Anthony Johnson, 19, of Glen Burnie; and Vincent Ethan Bunner, 19, of Pasadena with the murder of Flores.

Assistant State’s Attorney Kathy Evans said during the plea hearing that Butler was present during the robbery at Mr. Wings & Pizza and that Bunner and Johnson were the ones who fired the shots that killed Flores.

, the state alleged that he and Butler were the ones who shot Flores.

Evans said that during the police investigation, officers seized Butler's phone and found photographs of two 9 millimeter handguns taken the day of the murder.

Opening statements in Johnson's trial were heard Monday morning with witness testimony beginning in the afternoon. Johnson and Butler were to be tried together.

Johnson and Bunner also were arrested in connection with the , 48, of Glen Burnie, who was fatally shot while working at 7-Eleven. Bunner also pleaded guilty in January to his involvement in Attia's murder.

Police are still searching for a third suspect. Johnson’s trial in Attia's murder is scheduled to begin in September.

On Nov. 12, 2010, Flores was shot twice in the upper body during an armed robbery inside the pizza shop on the 7600 block of Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard in Glen Burnie. He was transferred to , where he was later pronounced dead.

According to police, four teens entered Mr. Wings & Pizza shortly before 9 p.m. that night and announced a robbery. Police said Flores was standing near a female store employee, later identified as Casandra Buruca, when the suspects entered. Both Flores and the employee told the teens to leave the store at which point Flores was shot and the suspects fled.

The fourth defendant, McLean, is scheduled to stand trial in October after he is expected to testify against Johnson, according to a plea agreement with the state.
