Two North County Students Win Gates Millennium Scholarships
Three students in Anne Arundel County won the prestigious national scholarships.

Three students in Anne Arundel County–including two from North County High School–won Gates Millennium scholarships as they prepare for college.
Cierra Carter and Fatima Tahir, of North County, and Mekaila Murray, of Old Mill, won the scholarships, which will pay for most of their expenses in college, according to a press release from Anne Arundel County Public Schools.
Only two other students from Anne Arundel County have ever won the scholarships, and Maryland totaled 13 of the 1,000 scholarships handed out by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation this year.
"This is just another example of the incredible students we have in our school system," Superintendent Kevin Maxwell said in a statement from AACPS.
Carter, who is in the AVID program, plans to major in journalism and global studies at Liberty University.
Tahir is looking to become a pediatrician, and she will begin her college education at the University of Maryland Baltimore County to major in molecular biology and biochemistry.
Murray, an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme student at Old Mill, plans to major in political science and Spanish at Texas Christian University.
