Map: Mosquito Spraying Coming To Milford, Marlborough

It's possible EEE could reemerge this summer. Mosquito spraying across the region begins Thursday.

MILFORD, MA — As coronavirus begins to taper in the area in warm weather, it's time to start thinking about other major health threats: Eastern equine encephalitis and West Nile virus.

Beginning Thursday, the Central Mass Mosquito Control Project will be out in towns and cities across the region spraying to control mosquito larvae, including in Milford and Marlborough.

A pesticide called Bti will be delivered by helicopter over wetlands, and in smaller areas by hand. Bti delivers a type of bacteria that destroys the larvae of mosquitoes, black flies, and fungus gnats, and is not harmful to humans, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

The spraying will hopefully reduce the chance that Massachusetts sees a repeat of 2019, when 12 Massachusetts residents were diagnosed with EEE and three died. According to the state Department of Public Health, EEE outbreaks happen every 10 to 20 years, and can last for up to three years at a time.
