Hazlet Police More Hairy Than Usual, For A Good Cause

Like many of their brothers and sisters in blue, Hazlet Police last month opted not to shave for charity. Merlin's Beard! It worked.

HAZLET, NJ - During the month of November, which was deemed Movember, Hazlet Police officers - normally the picture of good grooming - have been, well, frankly, one large hairy mess. That is because the department participated in what officers described on their Facebook page as a "Movember Movement" or fundraiser.

Initiated to raise cancer awareness - where oftentimes a patient loses hair during chemoherapy - the officers from the police chief on down waived their groowing standards if participants made a donation to the Movember charity,

"We are proud to say that our officers raised $1,800 and the PBA matched another $1,000," reads the Hazlet Police Facebook page. "That money will help fund programs that focus on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health, men’s health awareness and healthy lifestyles."

According to No-Shave.org, the goal was to grow awareness by embracing your hair, which many cancer patients lose, and letting it grow wild and free. Money then spent on hair style, control or removal could be donated to the cause which is devoted to educating people about cancer prevention, saving lives and helping those people living with cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

Participants were encouraged to grow a beard, cultivate a mustache (if they could), letting those legs go natural and skipping that waxing appointment. The hairy among us set up personal No-Shave November fund-raising pages. Those who are not hormone-laden to grow hair like Neanderthals could support those who could.

The rules of No-Shave November are simple: put down your razor for 30 days and donate your monthly hair-maintenance expenses to the cause. Strict dress-code at work? Grooming and trimming are acceptable although where is the fun in that?
