Holmdel Police To Participate In "Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day"

Holmdel police will be among the departments nationwide participating in Saturday’s “Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day.”

The program is “designed to increase awareness about safe driving behaviors and keep the state’s roadways fatality free for one-day,’’ a news release about the initiative said.

According to the news release:

Police will conduct “enforcement to educate the public to the growing concerns of pedestrian safety and overall safe driving behaviors.”

Last year in New Jersey, 556 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes, up from 542 in 2013.

Pedestrian fatalities rose from 129 in 2013 to 170 last year.

“Clearly, this effort will go a long way in our continuing efforts to stem the tide of tragedies that occur every day on New Jersey’s roadways,” Chief John Mioduszewski said in a prepared statement. “Shining the spotlight on this one day can help create a groundswell of support for good driving behaviors that can carry over throughout the year.”

“Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day not only raises awareness about the individual responsibility we have for our driving behaviors, but also engages drivers in making positive changes behind-the-wheel every day of the year,” Sgt. Robert Philhower, supervisor of the Holmdel Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit, said in a prepared statement.
