Holmdel Seventh Graders Don't Judge Books By Covers

Satz School pupils engaged in their annual book bash in which they choose a wrapped book only by a limited description of the plot.

HOLMDEL, NJ - As part of their Language Arts classes, seventh graders at the William R. Satz School took part in the second annual Holiday Book Bash in which each book arrives gift-wrapped and with a tag that describes the plot of the story, but without revealing the title - all the better to entice readers into trying something, and helping them avoid judging a book by its cover.

In addition to reading, their teachers included a roaring fire - computer generated - and provided them with snacks and other literacy-engagement opportunities, like the "Deck the Halls" area, where students were encouraged to write a favorite quote or book title on a bulletin board.

Throughout the event, students were encouraged simply to read. They found comfy spots to curl up with their good books, spreading out all over the classroom.
