Holmdel Should do More to Honor our Veterans

Republican Candidate for Holmdel Twp. Committee wants to dedicate streets in town to Holmdel veterans with commemorative signs.

Both of my grandfathers served in World War 2. Although they’d never acknowledge it, they epitomized what’s become known as “The Greatest Generation”. They served our country with honor at a time when we – and the world – needed them most.

In fact, many of my friends and relatives have served our country, some of them making the ultimate sacrifice – what Abraham Lincoln called “the last full measure of devotion”.

The dedication, courage, and strength our men and women in uniform exhibit is almost beyond comprehension. It’s why finding new ways to honor our veterans is so important to me.

Holmdel’s sons and daughters have served on the frontlines of conflicts across the globe dating all the way back to the King Phillip War (1675-1678).

More than a decade ago, Holmdel developed a Veteran’s Memorial at Phillips Park to honor the United States Armed Forces and those individuals connected to our township who have honorably served in the military.

It’s time to take that one step further.

As many of you know, I’m always in favor of a proactive approach to things. When we have the opportunity to do MORE – I believe we should. That’s why, if elected to the Holmdel Township Committee, I’ll be the driving force behind naming streets in our town after Holmdel’s veterans – “sub-naming” them to be exact.

Our neighbors in Middletown have provided an excellent model for this. Adopting a similar program allows Holmdel to wear our love of our service men and women “on our sleeve” (so to speak). And every time we choose a new street to bear a veteran’s name; it’s not only a public acknowledgement of their service, it’s another rallying point for our community. We should be honoring our veterans THROUGHOUT the year, not just once a year.

Think about the feeling of turning onto a main road – or into a neighborhood – and seeing a red, white, and blue sign with a veteran’s name on it, just below the street sign. It’s a constant reminder to be thankful for our freedoms and the men and women who have fought to ensure we have them.

Enjoy Memorial Day and, when you have a moment, please take time to reflect and thank those that have so courageously served our country.
