Why Is A Peahen In A Sink In Holmdel?

This female peahen from Longstreet Farm figured out how to trigger the water sensors in the ladies' room.

HOLMDEL, NJ — If you've visited Longstreet Farm or Holmdel Park recently, and had to use the ladies' room, you may have had some company in there with you.

This female peahen has been seen repeatedly going into the ladies' room near Longstreet Farm and hopping up onto the sink. She is very intelligent, said county park spokeswoman Karen Livingstone, and she apparently figured out that water comes out of the faucet when the sensor is triggered. So she triggers the water with movement.

"She is very curious and intrigued by it," said Livingstone. "She has meandered over there several times now."

The peahen has been kept at Longstreet Farm for the past two to three years, Livingstone said. The public bathrooms are a short walk off the farm property, and the peahen is free to roam the grounds.
