Howell Scout Aims To Move Veterans Memorial To Soldier Park

As part of a fundraising effort to move the tribute, residents can purchase an engraved brick to be placed at the new Soldier Park memorial.

HOWELL, NJ - This Howell scout is seeking to move Howell’s war memorials from the old town hall on Preventorium Road to Soldier Memorial Park - and residents can help with the effort.

As part of his ambitious Eagle Scout project, resident Brendan Mueller of Troop 300 is aiming to beautify the new memorial with a paved walkway with engraved memorial bricks.

Interested parties can purchase a fully engraved, personalized brick for $125. All proceeds will go towards the construction of the project, according to a notice from the township.

Earlier this year, when presented with the project during a township council meeting in February, Mayor Theresa Berger called the initiative “something … that will look very meaningful.”

“My vision for my project is a paved area with monuments surrounding the pavers with a walkway leading up to the monuments,” Mueller said. He noted that he already has support from local landscaping and design firms, as well as a dedicated monument company, VFW and local veterans groups.

“This is a great project,” Berger said. “You know why? Because every time I go past that [memorial] - I have a family member that passed ... and his name is in the memorial, but you miss it up there. You go up there, but it’s out of the way, and people don’t really know that it’s there unless you’re from Howell.”

During his presentation before the council, Mueller noted that the total cost of relocating all the war memorials should cost between $7,500 and $10,000. The Sept. 11 memorial will not be affected.

The proceeds from the engraved brick fundraiser will help alleviate the financial burden, Mueller noted.
