Howell Wrestlers Get Escort After Repeating As State Champs

If you heard sirens Sunday afternoon, it was just a celebratory welcome home for the undefeated Rebels, who won the Group V title.

HOWELL, NJ — Those sirens you heard Sunday afternoon had nothing to do with an accident or emergency; they were just Howell police and firefighters welcoming home the state champion Howell High School wrestling team.

The Rebels won the NJSIAA Group V title for the second year in a row and finished undefeated for the 2017-18 season. Howell was 32-0 this season, and had just one loss in 2016-17, for a record of 6 2-1 over the two championship seasons, according to records on the Shore Conference wrestling website.

The Rebels beat Shore Conference foe Southern Regional in the Group V final on Sunday, 33-15, according to NJ.com, held at the RWJ Barnabas Healthcare Arena at Toms River High School North.

The Rebels were second at the Shore Conference Tournament, which was scored based on individual finishes rather than team vs. team this season, with Darby Diedrich and Kyle Slendorn both taking gold.

Now the team turns its attention to the NJSIAA individual championships, which culminate in Atlantic City in three weeks.
