Pedestrian ID'd In Fatal Route 9 Accident In Howell

Police confirmed the crash that happened late Tuesday night and shut down part of Route 9 was fatal.

HOWELL, NJ — A Toms River man has been identified as the pedestrian who was struck and killed crossing Route 9 on Tuesday night.

Cormic A. McCluskey, 48, of Toms River, was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:45 p.m., Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni said Wednesday.

McCluskey was crossing from the eastbound side of Route 9 just south of Kent Road in Howell at 11:21 p.m. when he was hit by a 2009 Subaru Legacy driven by Robert Velazquez, 43, of Toms River.

Velazquez was heading south in the left lane of Route 9 at the time of the collision, the prosecutor's office said.

Velazquez was uninjured in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Howell Township Police Department and the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team (SCART).

News 12 New Jersey reported McCluskey had climbed over the cement barrier separating the northbound and southbound lanes before being hit.
