20K Without Power As Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued In NJ

Tens of thousands of customers still reeling from Tropical Storm Isaias lost power again – and more of the damaging storm is expected in NJ.

NEW JERSEY – The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a severe thunderstorm warning in New Jersey for Wednesday afternoon. A fast-moving system was moving through the Garden State, bringing 60-mph winds and knocking out power for 20,000 (see list of towns below).

The storm comes a week just as some towns were still recovering from the damage left by Tropical Storm Isaias a week ago. Thousands of outages were reported in Toms River and Brick alone.

The storm was reportedly in Bergen County at press time. Here are the alerted areas:

  • Wednesday afternoon: Showers and thunderstorms likely. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 89. South wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
  • Wednesday night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Patchy fog after 3 a.m. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 71. South wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Thursday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Patchy fog before 8 a.m. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 83. Calm wind becoming east around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
  • Thursday NightA chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70. Calm wind becoming southeast around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
  • Friday: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 8 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 82. East wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
  • Friday night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2 a.m., then a slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 68. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Earlier, the National Weather Service reported a "severe thunderstorm warning" for Northern Ocean County in Southern Jersey and southeastern Monmouth County in Central Jersey. Toms River and Brick

At approximately 12:45 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was detected over Leisure Village East (near Toms River) moving southeast at 15 mph with 60 mph gusts of wind.

The agency reported that damage to roofs, siding, trees and power lines was possible. Potential affected areas include Asbury Park, Lakewood, Jackson, Brick Township, Farmingdale, Seaside Heights, Allenwood, Howell and Mantoloking.

Major roadways could be impacted, including Interstate 195 in New Jersey between mile markers 24 and 34 as well as Garden State Parkway between mile markers 76 and 103.

“In addition to large hail and damaging winds, frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm,” the National Weather Service wrote in a report on Wednesday. “Move indoors immediately. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.”

“Torrential rainfall is occurring with this storm, and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.”
