At the scene, Howell police used fire extinguishers from patrol vehicles while neighbors used garden hoses to extinguish smaller fires that emerged in the area.
"The blaze was so intense the woods caught on fire, a shed and fence two houses down began to burn," authorities said. "While the main house was a complete loss, other houses were saved. It was a collaborative effort amongst all of us. Residents, firefighters and police working together to help each other. We are all 'committed to community.'"
The New Jersey Red Cross put out a statement Thursday noting that the organization assisted a family of 10 in connection to the fire. The family recieved emergency assistance for temporary lodging, food and clothing.
In addition to multiple Howell fire departments, units from Wall, Freehold Township and Tinton Falls assisted at the scene.
