HOWELL, NJ — Strong winds have blown the Howell-O-Ween Spooktacular right off the Howell Township calendar.

The township announced Thursday morning that it was canceling the event, which was set for Thursday evening at Oak Glen Park.

No makeup date is planned, the announcement said. The family fun event initially had been scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 16, but predictions of heavy rain and wind prompted a postponment to Thursday.

"Today's forecast projects hazardous conditions," Howell officials said. "Consistent high winds along with frequent wind gusts of 45 - 55 mph combined with soft grounds and leafed trees today will result in the risk of some downed trees and power lines, resulting in scattered power outages."

"We apologize for any inconvenience but do take safety into consideration above all else," the announcement said.

There are two other Halloween events in the township, however. On Sunday, the Howell Township Police Department will host its third annual Pumpkin Palooza at Twin Pond Farm, 1459 Route 9 north. It runs from noon to 4 p.m. and has a variety of activities, including pumpkin painting with Howell police officers.

In addition, the Howell PBA and PAL are hosting Trunk or Treat. It is scheduled for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30 in the Howell Target parking lot.
