2 Boys Fall Through Ice In Rumson Monday

The boys are being called "very lucky" by Rumson police for surviving the incident, which happened around 1 p.m. Monday.

RUMSON, NJ — Two boys, both around 12 years old, fell through the partially frozen Navesink River off Rumson Monday afternoon, and are being called "very lucky" by Rumson police for surviving.

The first boy fell through the ice on 1st Street at about 1 p.m. Monday. The second boy then fell in trying to help his friend. Both boys were in the water for about three minutes and were able to get safely on dry land when police got there.

EMS workers also arrived on scene, but neither boy needed to go to the hospital.

"Luckily, other than being scared and cold, they were fine," Det. Sgt. Chris Isherwood of the Rumson PD told Patch. "One boy did slip in over his head; the other only got wet up to his chest. They were very lucky they were not further out."

"We are begging people to stay off the ice — begging them," Rumson police Chief Scott Paterson told NJ.com. "It looks safe but it's not. They got very lucky."
