48 Hours, Nearly 400 lbs of clothing, 100 tablets distributed
POWER's Operation Warmth® and Senior Connect® helps those impacted by COVID-19
POWER CHANGES LIVES, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in Morris Plains, NJ has changed the lives of over 150 families in just 48 hours. Operation Warmth® provided nearly 400 lbs of clothing in the form of "clothing kits" consisting of a winter coat, shirts, pants and socks for children sizes infant to Junior/Young adult to over 150 families. Senior Connect® provided 100 tablets to at-risk Seniors virtually connecting them to healthcare providers, pharmacies, grocery stores, houses of worship and wellness checks.
"During this pandemic, 8 out of 10 COVID-related deaths were persons ages 65 and older. Our seniors are just as important to our community as those who are younger. Many seniors play a critical role as an extension of care assisting parents with raising their grandchildren. We must protect our treasured jewels through our Senior Connect® program. Even though many children
are learning remotely and there's considerably less travel, the need for winter clothing, coats and hats still exist. Many families were displaced immediately before the March 13th official start of the pandemic and have literally only the clothes on their backs, we needed to help change that narrative" said Penelope Lopez, CEO and Chairman of POWER.
Donors stepped up to the call to action during Operation Holiday® purchasing Kindle Fire tablets and shipping them directly to POWER who programmed them with life-saving apps such as Zoom which has expanded its core services to include telehealth virtual visits. The use of virtual technology has shown to significantly decrease the amount of ER visits and hospital admissions, through prophylactic care. As COVID-19 continues to decimate communities, and disproportionately impact those of color and lower-income, new approaches to keeping vulnerable lives as safe as possible until either global vaccinations or eradication of the virus is paramount.
