FAIR HAVEN, NJ - During a very uncertain year for membership-based community organizations, the Garden Club of Fair Haven has not been deterred from attracting new members.

In fact, the 70-year-old organization recently inducted three new members, with two others slated to gain membership eligibility. In a statement to Patch, the club noted that five new members in a year with pandemic restrictions is a “wonderful achievement.”

The three newest members, Helen Spaulding, Dana Trinks and Kristin Hoey, were inducted into the club at its latest board meeting. The notable women fulfilled membership requirements by attending two meetings via Zoom and agreeing to be an active and engaging club member.

“It is wonderful that the publicity and word of mouth have attracted women interested in sharing and learning the love of gardening and the environment,” said Garden Club of Fair Haven president Richard Biernacki.

In early February, the monthly virtual club meeting highlighted the talents of three members: Casey Abel showcased her sewing creations, Mary Maas exhibited her handmade jewelry
and Lee Davidson conducted a brief demonstration on building a slab clay pottery vase.

Of course, the iconic floral designs made by several garden club members were also highlighted.

The upcoming March meeting will feature floral designer Judy McMaster, who will do a flower arrangement demonstration. In April, master gardener Irene Wanat will speak on “All-Star Perennials” best suited for the Rumson-Fair Haven area.

Garden Club-sponsored workshops are designed to educate the members and encourage participation in design and horticulture events.

The Garden Club of Fair Haven was established in 1951 with the goal of beautifying the borough. Meetings are conducted on the first Wednesday of every month at 12:30 p.m. from September through June. If you are interested in becoming a member, contact membership chairman Lee Davidson at lzilincar@aol.com. You do not have to live in Fair Haven to be a member.
