Former Rumson Police Chief, Robert ‘RT’ Hoffman, Dies At 76
The retired chief served Rumson for over 30 years, according to his obituary.
RUMSON, NJ – Former Rumson Police Chief Robert “RT” Hoffman died Saturday, according to the Borough of Rumson Police Department. Hoffman joined Rumson police in 1968, making his way through the ranks before serving as Chief of Police from 1993 through 1999. He was 76 when he passed on July 18.
The former police department member served Rumson Police for 31 years and was a lifetime member of the Oceanic Fire Department, according to his memorial website.
Hoffman was an active member of his community, an avid New York Giants fan and a loving “Poppy” to twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as his obituary notes. Born in Jersey City in 1944 to Henry and Mary Hoffman, the longtime Rumson resident graduated from the Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School in 1962 and went on to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps “proudly and honorably” before obtaining a criminal justice degree from Brookdale Community College.

The former chief was predeceased by his son Robert W. Hoffman, who passed in 1992, as well as his four brothers and two sisters. Hoffman was married to his wife, Jane A. Hoffman, for 54 years. They raised four children, Robert, Catherine, Laura and Michael, in Rumson.
A memorial service will be scheduled for a later date, according to his memorial website.
