Holy Cross Monsignor Dies at 79

Monsignor William J. Carton, 79, passed away on Saturday, July 13, at the Villa Vianney retirement home for priests in Lawrenceville.

Monsignor Carton lived in East Keansburg before entering the priesthood. He graduated from Red Bank Catholic High School in 1951 and attended St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore. He was ordained by Bishop Ahr in 1959.

He initially served as a curate in churches in the Trenton area. He then served as administrator at Holy Cross Church in Rumson, as Pastor of St. Mary's Church in Deal and St. Mark's Church in Sea Girt. He retired at the age of 75, which is mandatory in the Trenton Diocese.

Monsignor Carton was predeceased by his parents, James T. and Adelaide Carton. He is survived by: his brothers, Leo J. Carton, and his wife Mary Ann, and James A. Carton, and his wife Florence. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 17, from 3 to 8 p.m. at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 215 Crescent Pkwy., Sea Girt. On Thursday, July 18, visitation is from 9 a.m. until the mass begins at 11 a.m. at St. Mark's. Entombment will follow at St. Catharine Cemetery, Wall Township.
