
Longtime Rumson resident Lillian O. Smith passed away at her Rumson home at 96 on Sunday, Nov. 17.
A Rumson resident since 1964, Lillian enjoyed her career as personal secretary to Lewis Douglas in New York and London, during the time he served as the US Ambassador to England in the years following World War II.
After raising her family, she returned to work, most recently at SATCOM, a communications division at Fort Monmouth in Oceanport. Lillian was a member of St. George's by the River Episcopal Church in Rumson. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed gardening, politics, needlework, and investigating her Norwegian roots.
Lillian is predeceased by: her parents, her husband Wilfred H. Smith; her son, Thomas Peter Smith; and her brother, Roy Olsen.
She is survived by: her son, Stuart Smith, of Rumson; her daughter Peggy and husband Thomas Eicher, of Basking Ridge; her two grandchildren, Ingrid and Haley Eicher; her daughter-in-law, Linda Smith, of Brick; and her sister, Solveig Snell, of California.
A memorial service was be held at St. George's by the River on Nov. 30 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent in Lillian's memory to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
