Obituary: Charles Henry Daly, 91; Beloved Rumson/Fair Haven Community Member

Charles Henry Daly was born on December 23, 1922 in Naugatuck, CT to Marie Meegan Daly and Charles Francis Daly.

He attended Irving School for Boys in Tarrytown, NY and the following year, Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Massachusetts. He graduated from Brown University in 1945, where he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. His college years were interrupted by World War II, prompting Charlie to enlist in the Marines where he fought in Guam. He attended Yale University his junior year through the GI Bill.

After graduating from college, Charlie went to work for McLean Hunter Publishing Company in New York City. Shortly after, he started a 35 year career with McGraw-Hill Publications Company, also in New York, where he rose to Publisher of two successful business magazines, Coal Age and Engineering & Mining Journal.

Charlie met Marjorie Hetzel Dimm by chance on the beach in Spring Lake during the summer of 1950 and they married soon after. As he always said, “And the rest is history.” Their marriage of 62 years was full of love and laughter. We thank God that Charlie is re united with Marge, whom he loved so much.

With their three young daughters, they moved to Fair Haven and lived at 24 Woodland Drive for 37 years. After retiring, Marge and Charlie relocated to Navesink Estates in Atlantic Highlands -- “where they didn’t have to worry about cutting the grass,” as Charlie often said.

Charlie had a wealth of lifelong friends -- especially the Hartung brothers and his friends from Brown, his dear friends John Kimball and Jim Tyrrell.

He looked forward to his weekly foursome at Rumson Country Club, and got a big kick out of the NY Giants, the NY Jets and his beloved Yankees.

Charlie was on the Planning Board in Fair Haven for several years, and volunteered with the Catholic Church in their FISH program.

He had a lifelong love for jazz -- getting a lot of joy from his extensive CD and album collection, and “catching some jazz” whenever he could in NYC and elsewhere. He once noted that he wanted 3 people mentioned in his obituary: Ben Webster, Sid Catlett and Cliff Jackson, 3 accomplished jazz musicians. Such was his love for music.

The thing that most people who knew him would recognize was that he was always fair, always polite, and always pleasant -- to his family, to his friends, to anyone he came across. Everyone from the local dry cleaner to the chief of police loved him.

His three daughters feel so blessed to have had him as their Father. He was their protector, their guide and their friend. And his only grandchild, Teddy, is grateful to have had Papa guiding him and loving him his entire life.

He is survived by JoAnn Daly, Little Silver, Barbara Daly Campbell & George Campbell, New York City, Susan Daly Porter, Monmouth Beach, Edward Daly Porter, Toronto, brother Kevin Daly, Ellington, CT, and sister Maureen Daly Walden, Tucson AZ.

A funeral will be held at St. James Church in Red Bank on Tuesday, September 2 at 10:00am.
