Sandy Hook 5K/10K Is May 13 This Year

Now in its third year, Run The Hook 5K/10K returns to Sandy Hook on May 13 this spring. Race spots are nearly all booked, however.

SANDY HOOK GATEWAY NATIONAL RECREATION AREA, NJ — Now in its third year, Run The Hook 5K/10K returns to Sandy Hook this spring. The race will take place on Sunday, May 13 at Sandy Hook National Park. It begins at 10 a.m. The races start from Fort Hancock and weave through the park. That's a photo from the first year the race was held, in 2016.

Organizers say that this year the event will be 100% free of single-use plastics. About 1,700 people already signed up to run; you can sign up here: https://www.runthehooknj.com/r... They reached capacity for registration on May 1. They have to adhere to the limit set by their permit with the National Park System, said co-founder Joey Garofalo.

The 5K/10K partly raises money for Clean Ocean Action, a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to restoring, improving, and protecting the water quality of New Jersey’s oceans. A portion of the proceeds from the race will go directly to Clean Ocean Action.

Run the Hook was started in 2016 by Monmouth County natives Garofalo and Daragh Kneeshaw.
