Superstorm Sandy Damaged 560 Homes in Rumson

Superstorm Sandy inflicted damage on 560 homes and rental units in Rumson and nine in Fair Haven, according to an analysis of New Jersey Department of Community Affairs data by NJSpotlight.com. 

Some 414 Rumson homeowners reported minor damages from the historic storm, while 39 suffered "major" damage, defined as between $8,000 and $28,800 in storm costs. Damage under $8,000 was considered "minor." Severe damage — defined as over $28,800 in costs — was reported for 49 homes. 

At least 58 Rumson rental units took damage in the storm — 14 suffering minor damage, 26 incurring major damage and 18 with severe damage.

Fair Haven, by contrast, had only seven homes damaged in the storm: two with minor damage, two with major damage and three with severe damage. Two rental units in Fair Haven were impacted by the storm: one with major damage and one with severe damage.

The report indicates 259 Rumson businesses and 247 Fair Haven businesses indicated they were impacted by Sandy.

The average Federal Emergency Management Agency damage inspection came in at $21,976 in Rumson, where 1,213 homeowners sought FEMA assistance. It was $4,525 in Fair Haven, where 79 homeowners sought assistance, according to FEMA data.
