Turkey Vultures Feast on Sea Bright Beach

Learn more about the scavengers that have also been seen in Fair Haven.

They're a bit creepy and they've been seen lurking around the Rumson-Fair Haven area and, lately, on the beach in Sea Bright. They're turkey vultures.

The bald headed birds that have a massive wingspan, do a wobbly swoop on dead, relatively ripe prey and hang out in groups have been around the area for a while. What's strange, though, with the latest sighting on the beach, is that it's uncharacteristic for the birds to hang around in the fall.

Usually they come back "home," or to whatever place they've decided to make their home, in the spring. These two in the photo above were seen on the beach recently, feasting on some fish.

People have reported sightings of the large turkey-looking scavengers perched atop people's roofs in Fair Haven and circling above them.

Take a look at the above photo and YouTube video to learn more about the turkey vulture. The bird usually lives about 15 to 20 years, but in captivity can live into its 30s.
