Amazon To Open Second Fulfillment Center In Cleveland-Area

The online retailing giant will build a 650,000-square-foot center on the site of the old Euclid Square Mall.

EUCLID, OH—Northeast Ohio has scored again as the online retailing giant Amazon announced on Thursday that it would open a 650,000-square-foot fulfillment center in the old Euclid Square Mall. The center, which would employ 1,000 people, will be the second such center in the Cleveland area and fifth in Ohio.

Euclid Mayor Kirsten Holzheimer Gail welcomed the announcement this morning, and called the abandoned mall an ideal target for Amazon’s center. “While some saw a vacant mall, we saw an opportunity for growth and development. This project is a fantastic addition to the investment we are seeing in our industrial corridor.”

The new center could open in 2019.

The current mall will be demolished, possibly as soon as this coming winter, and a new structure will be built in its place, said Marty Castelletti, a senior project manager for Euclid. Plans for the new structure have been submitted “pretty much conditionally approved” by the city’s architectural review board.

Castelletti said he did not know what financial incentives Amazon wanted as part of the project.

“Our growth in Ohio is the result of an outstanding workforce and incredible customers,” said Sanjay Shah, Amazon’s Vice President of North America Customer Fulfillment. “We are proud to be adding 1,000 new jobs to the more than 6,000 Amazonians already working in the state.”

Earlier this month, the company announced it would open a fulfillment center in the old North Randall Park Mall. The company also recently announced an upcoming fulfillment centers in suburban Cincinnati, and it currently operates two fulfillment centers in suburban Columbus.
