CLEVELAND — Beachgoers should avoid Lake Erie's waters on Monday, the National Weather Service said.

After powerful thunderstorms swept through Northeast Ohio on Sunday and Monday morning, the lake's waters have become dangerous terrain for swimmers.

"Wind and wave action will cause currents on the lakeshore. Swimmers should not enter the water. Currents can carry swimmers away from shore through a sand bar and along structures extending out into the lake," the National Weather Service said.

There is a strong possibility of rip currents developing in Lake Erie on Monday, the agency added.

The waters should calm overnight, making for better swimming by Tuesday morning. Until then, swimmers should remain out of Lake Erie's waters.
