Browns Blues: Another Sunday, Another Loss (Yawn)

As the only team in NFL history to go 0-14 in back-to-back seasons, the Browns can continue to make history with two games left.

CLEVELAND, OH -- With Sunday’s 27-10 loss to the Ravens, the Cleveland Browns have the ignominious distinction of having won only three home games in three seasons.

So much for home field advantage.

That’s pretty much the sad state of the winless 2017 Browns in a nutshell.

This week, General Manager John Dorsey pissed off members of the team and even some members of the media (for some reason) by saying that the previous regime had failed to acquire “real players” to play for the Browns. It’s hard to argue against him.

If Dorsey was simply trying to light a fire under some players’ asses, it was all right by me. Somebody has to kick some ass in the Browns’ Berea headquarters. It sure isn’t going to be beleaguered, befuddled Hue Jackson, whose two-year record now stands at an incomprehensible 1-29. It’s the worst won-loss record of any head coach in NFL history.

The only question left in this season of infamy is, how can Jimmy Haslam NOT fire Jackson after he goes 0-16?

Hang on. They haven’t lost all 16 games yet, you may say. They still have a chance of winning one of the last two games of the season. All they have to do is beat the Bears in Chicago on Christmas Eve or the Steelers on New Year’s Eve in Pittsburgh. With playoff position in the balance for the Steelers, it could get real ugly at Heinz Field, but mercifully put an end to this catastrophic season.

It doesn’t matter how the Browns lost another game Sunday. DeShone Kizer was terrible. He threw two interceptions and was strip sacked in the end zone at the beginning of the third quarter for a Ravens’ 24-10 lead that pretty much ended the game.

For Kizer, it was yet another miserable performance in his season-long audition to prove he can be a decent NFL quarterback. He’s thrown the most interceptions of any quarterback in the league this year. The best that can be said of Kizer is that he’s young and is a “work in progress.”

For Jackson who was lauded as a “quarterback whisperer” when he was hired, Kizer’s horrible performance as the Browns’ only option at quarterback is another mark against him as both a teacher and head coach.

As my old boss used to say, you don’t get fired. You fire yourself. Jackson is doing a good job of doing just that.
