Cleveland Police Caution Against Gunfire, Fireworks On New Year's

The firing of guns and shooting off fireworks to celebrate New Year's Eve can be dangerous.

CLEVELAND, OH -- New Year's Eve is a time to celebrate, but it's still a time to be safe, said Cleveland Police Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia. The use of "celebratory gunfire" is illegal because a bullet, even fired into the air, can land blocks away and hurt someone.

Likewise, fireworks can be dangerous if they are not ignited in a safe location where they won't accidentally set fire to a roof or anything else. Sgt. Ciaccia said that the police, fire and EMS will be on special alert New Year's Even to make sure nobody is injured, and safety is maintained.
