METRO CLEVELAND, OH — Hundreds of Cleveland-area auto jobs could be on the line after, according to union leaders, Ford Motor Co. changed its mind on a commitment to bring a new product line to its Ohio Assembly Plant in Avon Lake and instead will move that production to Mexico, various news reports say.

United Auto Workers Vice President Gerald Kariem said part of the last contract with Ford was a commitment to a $900 million investment in the Avon Lake plant. But he said the Detroit-based automaker has dropped its plan for a new product line in Ohio.

About 1,700 hourly employees work at the Ohio ford plant, the Detroit Free Press has reported. The development is “certainly very alarming,” Avon Lake Economic Development Director Ted Esborn told News 5 Cleveland.
