Former RTA Bus Driver Sentenced In Vehicular Homicide Case

The former RTA bus driver who struck and fatally injured a woman last December was sentenced to a year's probation and community service.

CLEVELAND, OH -- A former RTA bus driver was sentenced Nov. 13 to a year's probation and ordered to do community service by Judge John J. Russo in a vehicular homicide incident from last December, according to cleveland.com. Antoinette Peterkin was fired by RTA after the company's review committee found that she had failed to come to a complete stop at a marked crosswalk just outside Key Tower at 7:30 a.m. Dec. 7, 2016. She struck Joan Keundig, 69, who was walking across the street. Keundig was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center where she died from her injuries 22 days later.

Peterkin pleaded guilty in October to misdemeanor vehicular homicide. Russo also suspended Peterkin's driver license for one year.

The incident was used as a reason not to allow buses to drive through Public Square on Superior Avenue after the new design had created a pedestrian-only oasis, around which buses had to circumnavigate.
