Huntington, FirstMerit to Close 50 Northeast Ohio Branches

If you have an account with Huntington Bank or FirstMerit, you may have to change your routine when it comes to banking.

Huntington Bank announced the upcoming closure of 50 Huntington and FirstMerit branches in Northeast Ohio on Thursday, reported Cleveland.com. The closures may be fallout from Huntington's January purchase of FirstMerit Corp for $3.4 billion.

The closings are half of the 100 nationwide, mostly midwestern, branches Huntington will close later this year.

Of the banks closing, 15 are located in Cuyahoga county, including two within Cleveland. The Cleveland branches closing are located at 25 W Prospect Ave and 11427 Euclid Ave.

Employees at affected branches were notified Thursday of the closings. The branches are expected to close later in 2016 and in early 2017. Only time will tell how many branch staff will lose their jobs. The banks employ a combined 16,200 employees.

Huntington CEO Steve Steinour said in January that 39 percent of FirstMerit's 367 branches, or about 143 locations, are within one mile of an existing Huntington branch. The two banks have a combined 1,000 locations and 1,900 ATMs.

Huntington projects $2 billion in savings via the merger, and will create a bank with nearly $100 billion in assets.
