Ohio Passes 1 Million Reported COVID-19 Cases

In the span of a year, 1 million Ohioans have contracted COVID-19, the Ohio Department of Health reported.

COLUMBUS, OH — Ohio passed 1 million reported COVID-19 cases on Monday, the state health department reported.

"When this started, I had no idea we'd still be at this nearly a year later," Gov. Mike DeWine said Monday.

In the span of nearly a year, there have been 1.001 million reported cases of COVID-19 among Ohioans. At least 18,340 Ohioans have died because of the virus, the Ohio Department of Health reported. Since March 2020, more than 52,000 Ohioans have been hospitalized because of COVID-19.

Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, chief medical officer for Ohio Department of Health, said he does not believe a "sizable portion" of the cases are from people who were infected with COVID-19 more than once.

The current population of Ohio is 11.69 million, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Here are all of Monday's COVID-19 numbers:

  • New cases: 1,444.
  • New hospitalizations: 78.
  • New ICU admissions: 13.
  • Total deaths: 18,340

"What we're starting to see is a plateau. We were going down for a while, but it looks like we've leveled off," DeWine said Monday.

At least 951,197 Ohioans have contracted COVID-19 and recovered, the Ohio Department of Health said.

Nearly 24 percent of Ohioans have received at least the first part of the COVID-19 vaccine, according to the state health department. Nearly 14 percent of Ohioans have received both COVID-19 vaccine shots.

As of Monday afternoon, 2.78 million Ohioans had received at least the first shot of the two-part COVID-19 vaccine; and 1.59 million Ohioans have completed the vaccination process.

To facilitate vaccine distribution, Ohio has launched its first statewide vaccine registration tool, which can be accessed online.
